Due to its location by the sea, the mild climate and rich freshwater sources, people settled on the western side of the Bay of Málaga in prehistoric times. The oldest evidence of the consumption of mussels and snails by Neanderthals comes from the Bajondillo Cave, dating back around 150,000 years.
