The Porta San Gennaro (in English: Saint Januarius Gate) is the oldest gate in the city of Naples, already mentioned in documents dating back to 928, when fear of the Saracens, who had already destroyed the city of Taranto, had spread.
It was the only access point for those coming from the north of the city. The name Porta San Gennaro comes from the name of the only road leading to the catacombs of the saint of the same name.
