Embark on a moderate hike through the North York Moors National Park, offering expansive views and varied terrain. This 7.9-mile (12.7 km) loop features open moorland, tranquil woodlands, and panoramic vistas across Hutton and Gisborough Moor. You will gain about 992 feet (302 metres) in elevation, with the entire route taking approximately 3 hours and 38 minutes to complete. A highlight is the iconic Captain Cook's Monument, from where you can spot peaks like Ingleby Bank and Roseberry Topping, often called "Yorkshire's Matterhorn." You will experience a blend of gravel paths, natural surfaces, and quiet roads, sometimes walking through thick heather. This trail offers a sense of blissful silence and sweeping views, especially during autumn when the landscape displays a variety of green, orange, and golden brown shades. The trail is generally considered moderate, so good fitness is recommended. You should be sure-footed in certain sections, especially on a steep and narrow path descending from Captain Cook's Monument, where a hiking stick might be helpful. The Gribdale Gate car park on Dikes Lane serves as a common starting point for this loop, making it easy to access. This area is rich in history, particularly linked to Captain James Cook, who spent his childhood in the nearby village of Great Ayton. The 18-meter (60ft) obelisk of Captain Cook's Monument, erected in 1827 on Easby Moor, commemorates the renowned explorer. You can also see Roseberry Topping, a hill Cook himself is believed to have climbed in his youth. Portions of the well-marked Cleveland Way are integrated into the loop, providing clear navigation and continuous scenic beauty. Keep an eye out for other historical points, such as the Hanging Stone on Great Ayton Moor.
