After the Reformation, there was no longer a Roman Catholic parish in Lutheran Aurich, and the Emden Concordats prevented the formation of a new one. It was not until the 19th century, on May 2, 1849, that the government of the Kingdom of Hanover approved the construction of a church due to the growing number of Catholics in the town, which was consecrated on October 17, 1849. The inconspicuous, towerless building was built outside the historic town center on the southern city wall. It was dedicated to the Frisian Liudger.
