Jourdain Castle, traditionally known as "Hof te Crainhem", is the basis for the origins of Kraainem. From its inception, Laag-Kraainem (the residential area around the church) consisted of a castle center with a church, and a courtyard center (farm) where the current Jourdain Castle is located. The castle buildings are set in a partially walled surrounding park (protected as a landscape in 1976). The actual entrance, flanked by two brick fence pillars with bluestone bands and a covering slab, is located on Kasteelweg.
