Vandring

This bluestone accident cross for Willem D'hanens is located along the former Mechelen-Terneuzen railway line in De Klinge (Sint-Gillis-Waas). D'hanens, a lawyer and alderman in Sint-Niklaas, was one of the most important shareholders of the railway and was in the habit of traveling by train to Sint-Gillis-Waas or De Klinge several times a week to make inspection rounds. On a fateful Thursday in the winter of 1888, D'hanens fell dead here on the spot. According to the doctor, he had succumbed to a heart artery rupture. A bluestone cross was placed by his family at the place of his death.
