Billy Fury was born Ronald Wycherley in Haliburton Street in The Dingle, Liverpool on 17 April 1940. He first found fame in the early 1960s and is remembered as one of the most famous stars in the history of British rock and roll.
Music was always his life. He taught himself to play the guitar and write songs from an early age. Whilst working on the tugs, Ronnie Wycherley as he was known then, formed a skiffle group with workmates just for fun, with the tongue in cheek name, 'The Formby Sniffle Groop'.

The statue commemorates the successful Liverpool rock 'n' roll singer Billy Fury. Fury had more top 20 hits in the UK than most other artists and groups in the 1960s, surpassed only by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley. Billy Fury died on January 28, 1983 at the age of just 43 as a result of heart failure.

Billy Fury was one of the most famous British rock and roll stars. He was born in Liverpool in 1940. His record sales were comparable to those of Elvis, the Beatles and Cliff Richards. The sculpture is by Tom Murphy and was donated to the National Museums Liverpool in 2003 by the "Sound of Fury" fan club.
