“On Sunday, October 9, 1712, two mouths burst, one on a small hill and another one immediately below, spewing out a great quantity of fire, stones and ash. Thus began one of the few accounts we have of the historic eruption of El Charco.
This eruption “caused great material damage in the southern area of the western face of Cumbre Vieja; there were no fatalities. The ‘ponds, 60 bushels of the best crops on the island’ and ‘two houses, haystacks and granaries’ burned until it ceased on December 3,” he concludes.
