The Martín volcano, located in the municipality of Villa de Mazo, is one of the most beautiful in Cumbre Vieja. Its shape, the variety of colors, the environment and the views it offers make it one of the most beautiful volcanoes to see on La Palma for many people. It erupted in 1646 and despite being one of the oldest recorded eruptions, we have some literature about it.

This eruption began on October 2, 1646 and ended on December 18 of the same year. A long eruption of 82 days that could perfectly remind us of what we recently experienced with the Tajogaite eruption.

Height of the Martin volcano
This volcano stands out for being one of the steepest, if we look at it from the back of the crater and its peak is at 1,597 meters above sea level. Although as with most summit volcanoes, they are not too high, when observed from their base (around 400 meters).

Martín is also known as the Tigalate volcano, a town that belongs to the municipality of Mazo and that we can visit today. However, its lavas affected the municipalities of Mazo and Fuencaliente practically equally.

Some volcanoes are named after saints of the Catholic religion, although Saint Martin was not celebrated on October 2, the day this eruption began. For this reason, many refer to it as Tigalate, an area where the land began to open.
