In the years 1811 to 1814, during the Napoleonic Wars, French prisoners that were kept in Selkirk were trusted to go for a walk and not try and escape. They could go as far as the parish boundary: the hawthorn bush, now inside the railings, marked the limit of how far they could go.

This is amazing stuff - one of those little stories that history is full of!
