North Moat Mountain is a relatively quiet summit, especially given its location in the heart of the White Mountains and so close to the town of North Conway, and stands at 3196 feet. The open summit has many rock ledges to sit on and rest at with unobstructed views of Middle Moat Mountain to the south, Big Attitash Mountain to the west, and the surrounding area. In the summer there are large blueberry bushes that surround the summit. The ripe berries make for an excellent snack before heading down the mountain.

What are the main hiking routes to North Moat Mountain?

The most common routes to North Moat Mountain include trails starting from Passaconaway Road in Albany, NH, and the Diana's Baths trailhead on West Side Road in Conway, NH. Many hikers choose to combine North Moat with Middle Moat Mountain via the Moat Mountain Trail for a longer, challenging ridge hike. The trails involve significant elevation gain and rocky sections, often leading to the open summit.

What is the geological history of North Moat Mountain?

North Moat Mountain is part of the Moat Mountains, which were formed from Jurassic-era Moat Volcanics, a component of the broader White Mountain Igneous Suite. This geology contributes to its distinctive rocky and ledgy terrain. The mountains were shaped by ancient eruptions, with evidence of an 'extrusive phase' where molten magma seeped from the earth. Like the rest of the White Mountains, glaciers also played a significant role in shaping its landscape.

Is North Moat Mountain suitable for winter hiking?

While the intro mentions late spring through fall as the best time, North Moat Mountain can be hiked in winter, but it presents a significantly greater challenge. The trails become icy and snow-covered, requiring specialized gear such as microspikes or snowshoes, and potentially an ice axe. Winter conditions can be severe, with strong winds and extreme cold, so only experienced winter hikers with proper preparation should attempt it.

Are there any family-friendly or beginner hiking options on North Moat Mountain?

North Moat Mountain is generally considered a very challenging hike with steep, rocky sections and significant elevation gain, making it less suitable for young children or beginner hikers. However, the nearby Diana's Baths offer a much easier, family-friendly walk to beautiful waterfalls and pools, which can be enjoyed as a separate outing or as the initial, gentler part of a longer, more strenuous hike towards the summit.

    Is North Moat Mountain dog-friendly?

Yes, North Moat Mountain trails are generally dog-friendly. Many hikers bring their dogs, but it's important to remember the challenging terrain, including steep, rocky sections and potential rock scrambling. Ensure your dog is fit enough for a strenuous hike and bring plenty of water for both of you. Always keep your dog on a leash and practice Leave No Trace principles.

What are the parking options for North Moat Mountain trailheads?

Trailheads for North Moat Mountain are accessible from Passaconaway Road in Albany, NH, and the Diana's Baths trailhead on West Side Road in Conway, NH. Parking areas can fill up quickly, especially during peak season (summer and fall weekends). Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot. Be aware that some parking areas may require a fee or a White Mountain National Forest pass.

Are there any permits required to hike North Moat Mountain?

Generally, no specific hiking permits are required for day hikes on North Moat Mountain. However, some parking areas within the White Mountain National Forest may require a parking fee or a recreation pass (such as the America the Beautiful Pass or a local WMNF pass). It's always a good idea to check the latest regulations before your visit.

What unique natural features can be found on North Moat Mountain?

Beyond its stunning views, North Moat Mountain boasts an open, rocky summit due in part to a historic fire that burned off evergreens in 1854, creating an unusually low treeline. In summer, hikers can enjoy large blueberry bushes surrounding the summit, offering a refreshing snack. The nearby Diana's Baths, a series of picturesque cascades and pools formed by Lucy Brook, are also a notable natural attraction often incorporated into hikes.

How long does it typically take to hike North Moat Mountain?

The time required to hike North Moat Mountain varies significantly based on the chosen route, individual fitness levels, and how often you stop to enjoy the views. A round trip to the summit and back can take anywhere from 6 to 9 hours for most hikers, especially if combining it with Middle Moat Mountain. The trails are considered very hard, so plan for a full day of hiking.

What is the elevation of North Moat Mountain and its prominence?

North Moat Mountain has an elevation of 3,202 feet (972 meters). Its prominence, which is the independence of a summit, is 1,200 feet (320 meters). This significant prominence contributes to the expansive and unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views from its open, rocky summit.

Are there any cafes or restaurants near the North Moat Mountain trailheads?

North Moat Mountain is located near North Conway, New Hampshire, which offers a wide array of dining options.
