Old signposts to British cemeteries can still be found on the inner wall of the gate. It was one of the most important 'passages' to the front during the war and was used more than the Menin Gate, because this road could be better protected against enemy artillery.

It is also the gate through which you can walk from the beautiful green fortifications of the city to the nature reserve De Verdronken Weide (which then flows into the domain around Zillebekevijver).

Vandring

Originally this was the southern gateway to the city of Ypres. The actual city gate was demolished in the mid-nineteenth century, after Ypres was written off as a fortified city. On the site of the gate, a stylish bridge was built that connected the two fortress walls. During the First World War the bridge was almost completely destroyed. A stone bridge took its place, decorated with the city's coat of arms.
