Completed in 1954, the large Campilhas dam lake can be used to produce electricity, supply drinking water and maintain an irrigation network. Due to repeated droughts, the lake can no longer recover the levels of its creation.

The Campilhas dam (Portuguese Barragem de Campilhas) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Setúbal district. It dams the Campilhas, a left (western) tributary of the Sado to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Campilhas). The small town of Cercal do Alentejo is located about five kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1941. Construction was completed in 1954. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Campilhas e Alto Sado.[1]

Are there specific trails around Campilhas Reservoir suitable for beginners or families with children?

Yes, the Campilhas Reservoir area offers several paths that are relatively flat and well-suited for leisurely walks, making them ideal for beginners or families. While specific marked 'beginner' trails might not be abundant, the general terrain around the lake is gentle. Look for routes that stick close to the reservoir's edge, avoiding steeper inclines. These often provide beautiful views and opportunities for nature observation without significant difficulty.

Is Campilhas Reservoir a dog-friendly destination?

Generally, Campilhas Reservoir is considered dog-friendly, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings with their canine companions. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas where wildlife is present or near agricultural land. Remember to bring water for your pet and clean up after them to maintain the area's natural beauty for everyone.

What are the parking options like at Campilhas Reservoir?

Parking at Campilhas Reservoir is typically available in designated areas near the dam or popular access points. While there isn't a large, formal parking lot, visitors can usually find spots along the access roads or in small clearings. It's advisable to arrive earlier in the day, especially during peak seasons or weekends, as spaces can fill up quickly. Always park responsibly and ensure you're not blocking any access routes.

Can I swim in Campilhas Reservoir?

Yes, Campilhas Reservoir is suitable for swimming and is a popular spot for wild swimming, especially during warmer months. The tranquil waters offer a refreshing escape. However, always exercise caution, be aware of varying water depths, and avoid swimming near the dam structure or any operational areas. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options close to Campilhas Reservoir?

Campilhas Reservoir is primarily a natural area, so immediate amenities like cafes or restaurants directly on its shores are limited. For dining and accommodation, you would need to venture to nearby towns. Cercal do Alentejo, located approximately five kilometers southwest of the dam, offers a selection of cafes, traditional Portuguese restaurants, and various types of accommodation, from guesthouses to rural tourism options.

What are the best viewpoints around Campilhas Reservoir for photography or scenic appreciation?

The entire perimeter of Campilhas Reservoir offers numerous scenic spots, but some areas provide particularly striking views. The dam itself offers a panoramic perspective of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape. Exploring the eastern side of the reservoir, especially where paths lead closer to the water's edge, can reveal picturesque coves and reflections, ideal for photography. Look for elevated points along the trails for broader vistas of the water and the Alentejo countryside.

How do water levels in Campilhas Reservoir affect activities, especially hiking?

Water levels in Campilhas Reservoir can fluctuate significantly due to droughts and its role in irrigation. Lower water levels can expose more of the lakebed, potentially altering the landscape and making some areas muddy or uneven. Hikers should be prepared for these conditions by wearing appropriate footwear. Conversely, higher water levels might submerge some paths closer to the shore. Always check local conditions if possible, and be flexible with your route planning.

Is public transport available to reach Campilhas Reservoir?

Direct public transport to Campilhas Reservoir is very limited. The reservoir is best accessed by private vehicle. If relying on public transport, you would likely need to take a bus to a nearby town like Cercal do Alentejo or Santiago do Cacém, and then arrange for a taxi or other local transport to reach the reservoir itself. Planning ahead is crucial if you don't have your own transportation.

What is the historical significance of the Campilhas Dam?

The Campilhas Dam, completed in 1954, holds significant historical importance as a crucial component of the Alentejo Irrigation Plan. Its construction was initiated in 1941 to combat frequent water shortages in the region, playing a vital role in supporting agricultural development by storing winter rainwater for distribution during dry summers. Beyond irrigation, it also contributes to drinking water supply and electricity generation, making it a cornerstone of regional infrastructure.

Are there any circular walking routes around Campilhas Reservoir?

While there isn't one single, officially marked circular route that encompasses the entire reservoir, many hikers create their own circular walks by combining existing trails and tracks around its perimeter. These routes often involve a mix of dirt roads, narrower paths, and sections that might require navigating around inlets. Exploring the various arms of the reservoir can lead to pleasant loops, but it's recommended to use a map or GPS to plan your route effectively.

What kind of wildlife can be observed at Campilhas Reservoir?

Campilhas Reservoir is a rich habitat for diverse wildlife. Birdwatchers can spot various species, especially water birds. The reservoir's waters are home to fish like black bass, barbel, carp, and perch. On land, visitors might encounter wild pigs, various lizards, and a wide array of insects and butterflies. The tranquil environment makes it an excellent spot for nature enthusiasts to observe the local fauna.
