The Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass is a significant modern engineering structure located on the Möhlin river in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Situated near Breisach, where the Möhlin flows into the Rhine, this facility plays a crucial role in both flood management and ecological conservation. At an elevation of approximately 191 meters, the weir helps regulate water levels as part of the Breisach cultural weir flood retention area, while the innovative fish pass ensures the continued migration of aquatic life.

    -Möhlin weir - fishway - ℹ️-Point-

The Möhlin weir is a central control element of the Breisach cultural weir flood retention area and thus assumes an important function in its operation.

The Möhlin weir was put into operation in the 1960s as a subsidiary of the Breisach culture weir. Since then, it has enabled the Möhlin to be impounded, which, together with the impoundment of the Rhine at the Kulturwehr, supports and stabilizes the groundwater levels. In 2018, the regional council of Freiburg (RP) built a fish ladder at the Möhlin weir.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What kind of fish pass is the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass, and how does it work?

The Möhlin Weir features a vertical slot fish pass. This design consists of a series of 22 individual pools, arranged like a staircase, with narrow vertical openings (slots) in the walls. Water flows gradually through these slots, allowing fish to swim through without needing to jump. The pools are sized to allow fish to rest during their migration. To help fish find the pass, an additional bottom outlet creates a strong 'lure current' of 1,500 liters per second, guiding them towards the fishway's entrance.

Is the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass suitable for families with young children?

Yes, the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass is considered family-friendly. The terrain around the fish pass is generally gentle, making it suitable for leisurely walks. The educational information boards provide an engaging way for children and adults to learn about river ecosystems and fish migration. It's a great spot for an outing where you can combine education with enjoying the riverside scenery.

Are dogs allowed at the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass, and are there any specific rules?

While the area is generally welcoming to visitors, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife and other visitors. There are no specific rules prohibiting dogs mentioned, but responsible pet ownership, including cleaning up after your dog, is expected to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.

What is the best way to get to the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass by public transport?

Are there any specific viewpoints or landmarks to look out for near the Möhlin Weir?

The Möhlin Weir itself, with its impressive engineering and the visible fish pass structure, is the primary landmark. The information boards provide detailed insights into its function. Beyond the weir, the surrounding area offers pleasant riverside scenery along the Möhlin river and towards the Rhine, which can be enjoyed from various points along the trails.

What is the typical elevation gain or difficulty of trails around the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass?

Can you observe fish migrating through the pass, and when is the best time for wildlife spotting?

While the fish pass is designed for fish migration, directly observing fish can be challenging as there are no dedicated underwater viewing windows mentioned. However, the information boards explain the process in detail. For general wildlife spotting, the riverside environment of the Möhlin offers opportunities for birdwatching and observing other aquatic life. The best time for wildlife spotting often depends on the season and time of day, with early mornings or late afternoons generally being more active.

The Möhlin Weir was put into operation in the 1960s as a subsidiary of the Breisach cultural weir. Its primary historical function has been to enable the impoundment of the Möhlin river, which, in conjunction with the impoundment of the Rhine at the Kulturwehr, helps to support and stabilize groundwater levels in the region. The fish pass itself is a more recent addition, built in 2018, reflecting modern ecological conservation efforts.

Are there any circular walks or longer hiking trails that incorporate the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass?

Yes, the Möhlin Weir and Fish Pass can be integrated into various walking and cycling routes.
