Constance Georgine Markiewicz (1868 - 1927), Irish nationalist and socialist. Chairwoman of the Cumann na mBan from 1916 to 1926. Sentenced to death by the British after the failed Easter Rising in 1916. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment because the death penalty was not applied to women at that time. Elected as the first female MP to the British House of Commons in 1919, but never took her seat. Became Minister of Labour in the Eamon de Valera government in 1919, making her the first woman in Europe to hold a ministerial post.
