The current building with the floor plan of a Greek cross dates from the 16th century, although the foundations of the church that dominates the citadel are much older (13th century). During the Turkish siege in 1553, the city's residents are said to have carried the crucifix through the streets and used it to drive out the Turks.
Sometimes concerts also take place here.
