The Fort national was built in 1689 by Vauban. The "Kininklijke Fort" became a "National Fort" in 1789 and finally private property. The visit reminds of a memorable duel, in which Surcouf competes against 12 opponents. He spared the last… as a witness to his exploits!

The Fort National was built at the end of the 17th century on a small fortified island of Saint-Malo, designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, known as the «fortress builder» of Louis XIV.
After the French Revolution, the fort served as a prison for a long time.
Today parts of the fortification can be visited, at low tide a footpath leads over. The tides should be kept in mind, because at high tide you are stuck on the island.
