Beyond the immediate viewing area, visitors can hike the Silver Cascade Trail, which is less than a mile long and moderately steep, leading to Silver Cascade Falls. For a longer adventure, the Columbine Trail starts at the park's entrance (Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center) and terminates at Helen Hunt Falls, offering a 4-mile route.
Yes, Helen Hunt Falls is particularly spectacular in late fall and winter when the falls are frozen, offering a unique and serene experience. As long as road conditions are safe, winter can be a fantastic time to visit for solitude and beauty. Be prepared for potentially icy conditions on trails and roads.
Parking at Helen Hunt Falls can become very crowded, especially during summer months and on weekends. The parking area accommodates about 30 vehicles. Arriving before mid-morning is strongly recommended to secure a spot, as it fills up fast.
While the immediate area around Helen Hunt Falls is generally dog-friendly, it's always best to check specific park regulations for North Cheyenne Cañon Park regarding leashes and waste disposal. Many trails in the park allow leashed dogs.
The falls are easily visible from the parking lot, offering a good view for all visitors. However, the paths leading to the bridge above the falls and the hiking trails beyond are not typically wheelchair accessible due to their natural terrain and moderate steepness.
There is a small Visitor Center, nicknamed "The Cub," located at the base of the falls. It is open during summer months and provides snacks, souvenirs, exhibits, and information about the area's nature and history.
The area is excellent for photography, wildlife viewing (including birds, and occasionally bears and mountain lions), and picnicking. Many visitors enjoy simply relaxing and taking in the natural beauty. The nearby North Cheyenne Cañon Park offers additional scenic drives and viewpoints.
The falls were officially named in 1966 in honor of Helen Maria Hunt Jackson (1830–1885). She was a prominent American poet, writer, and activist who championed improved treatment of Native Americans by the U.S. government. She lived in Colorado Springs and was buried there.
For any hike, even short ones, it's advisable to wear appropriate footwear, such as hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers. Depending on the season, layers of clothing, water, snacks, and sun protection are recommended. If visiting in winter, consider traction devices for your shoes.
Helen Hunt Falls is located within North Cheyenne Cañon Park, which is a natural area. For restaurants, cafes, pubs, and accommodation, you would need to venture into nearby Colorado Springs, which offers a wide range of options just a short drive away.
You can view the falls from the parking lot in just a few minutes. A short walk to the bridge above the falls might take 15-30 minutes round trip. If you plan to hike to Silver Cascade Falls, allow an additional 45 minutes to an hour. Longer hikes like the Columbine Trail would require several hours.
