Montreal's Chinatown originated in the 1890s when Chinese immigrants from the West Coast moved east to escape discrimination after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The neighborhood has retained its cultural charm despite numerous redevelopment plans beginning in the 1970s that reduced Chinatown's size and spread.
