The Castillo de Marbella has its origins in the time of Abderramán III, in the context of Ibn Hafsun's rebellion, to have a point on the coast from which to attack the rebel. Later it was of great importance for the defense of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada until it surrendered on June 11, 1485 to the Christian forces of Fernando el Católico. Other sources point to a Roman origin for the castle.

The Alcazaba de la Medina was a fortress probably built in the 10th century. At that time, Marbella was still under the rule of the Umayyad Caliphate. For the construction of the fortress, the craftsmen used mainly stone materials - including salvaged materials from Roman rule such as Ionic capitals - the top part of a column like those once built by the Greeks. Such a capital can be found, for example, on the Torre de la Pólvora in Calle Trinidad.

When we visited, a lot of it was being restored/renovated and therefore not accessible.
