Isola Madre is one of the Borromean Islands located in the Italian part of Lake Maggiore. Isola Madre is called the mother island because it seems to be the oldest in terms of vegetation. Yet the palace on Isola Bella is much older.
This island is almost entirely taken up by the botanical garden, striking for its rare flowers and plants from distant lands. The Borromeo Palace was built in the 18th century; it is a lot more authentic and smaller (and younger) than the palace on Isola Bella.

Staircase of the Wisteria:
During the flowering period in spring, the Chinese wisteria, floribunda roses and wisteria transform the architecture of this staircase into a spectacle of extraordinary colors. A curiosity: their origin can be recognized by the twists of their trunks and stems. Anticlockwise are the Chinese and American species, clockwise are the Japanese.
