After a Göttingen committee had been formed in 1885 and had to announce a competition in November 1886 for the construction of a monument to the famous chemist Friedrich Wöhler, the monument was unveiled in 1890 in front of the Old Auditorium. Today it stands in the Hospitalstraße, near the historical chemical laboratory, Wöhlers long-term research and activity site. The plaster shows the structural formula of urea.
