This area is an important part of Providence's early history, a reminder of the water that once covered the Great Salt Cove area. Over time, the water was drained, land was reclaimed, and starting in 1898, railroad tracks ran through the area to serve the city's numerous industrial plants. With the passage of time and the decline of the economy, the downtown area fell into disrepair. However, the river diversion project of the 1980s and 1990s revitalized Providence's downtown area, redesigning the former waterway. Today, Waterplace Park and the surrounding areas offer walking trails, restaurants, concerts, and the WaterFire Festival.
