Vandring

The statue "Elegua" stands in the Plaza de San Francisco in the old town of Teguise. Created in 2013 by sculptor Rigoberto Camacho Pérez from polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass and galvanized iron, it is a tribute to the "Los Diabletes (Little Devils) of Teguise." The 1.80-meter-high statue depicts a man in the costume of a Diablete. The mask is in the shape of a black bull's head with large horns and a long red tongue. The clothing is stamped with black and red striped diamonds.

'Los Diabletes' are part of the heritage of the Villa de Teguise. The 'Devils of Teguise' represent one of the oldest folk traditions of the Canary Islands. The dances of the natives, the Mahos, were integrated into the Corpus Christi festival.
The maintenance of the customs includes the masks and the historical clothing as recorded in the records of the 17th century. In the devil figure you can
Recognize elements of the customs and traditions of the Mahos, African slaves and local people. Today, the masks are one of the most interesting elements of the entire Canary Islands Carnival.
