Whaling is a significant part of Whitby's history - as the information board tells you here, between 1753 and 1833 there were 55 Whitby-based whaling ships. This arch celebrates this history. The original arch was erected in 1853; this one was donated by Alaska in 2003. Whitby Abbey is visible on the cliff from here.

An impressive pair of jaw bones framing the town and the ruins of its medeival hill top abbey. The arch was erected on Whitby’s West Cliff in 1853 to recognise the town’s important whaling history.
