The lively port city of A Coruña is located on the northwest coast of Galicia with beautiful sandy beaches.

The landmark of the city is the Tower of Hercules, one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The historic old town, the Cidade Vella, covers one square kilometer in the east of the peninsula. Almost everything else was razed to the ground in 1589 by the cannons of British warships commanded by a former pirate, Francis Drake.
