Bantry Harbour is an expansive and sheltered natural harbour on Bantry Bay. It's surrounded by rolling green hills and is part of the charming town of Bantry.
One of the most notable events in the history of Bantry Harbour was the attempted invasion by French forces in 1796. A French fleet, sent to support Irish rebels during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, sought shelter in the harbour but ultimately had to retreat due to bad weather and lack of coordination.

This large, vibrant city was once home to a fishing fleet. In 1968, an oil refinery was even built in the bay on Whiddy Island. But the explosion of the oil tanker Betelgeuse in 1979, which killed approximately fifty people, put an end to the refinery's operations.

Vandring
Some say this is amongst one of the most beautiful harbours in Ireland. With lush green surroundings, the waters edge is a calm and picturesque place to catch your breath on a hike. There are ferry services to Whiddy Island from the harbour, another recommended walking destination.
