The Library of Alexandria was the most important ancient library. It arose at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. in the Macedonian-Greek city of Alexandria, which had been founded in Egypt shortly before. The date of the end of the library is unclear. The assumptions range from 48 B.C. to the 7th century. It is often thought that it fell victim to the destruction of the entire palatial quarter of Alexandria in the 3rd century.
