Hitler had the West Wall, which was more of propagandistic than strategic value, planned from 1936 and built between 1938 and 1940. The West Wall ran south for about 630 km from Kleve on the Dutch border to Grenzach-Wyhlen on the Swiss border.
The West Wall was a defensive system. It consisted of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and anti-tank obstacles.
