The charm of the Maison Fournaise, a famous guinguette on the banks of the Seine, attracted artists from the end of the 19th century. Pierre-Auguste Renoir notably painted his famous Déjeuner des canotiers in 1880, on the balcony of the restaurant.

La maison Fournaise is a former guinguette-hotel located on the island of the Impressionists, in Chatou, in the Yvelines. Today it again houses a restaurant and the municipal museum which preserves collections on the history of the site and canoeing, one of the first modern leisure activities on the water.

André Derain (born in Chatou) and Maurice de Vlaminck set up their studio in the Levanneur house, next to the Fournaise restaurant. Guillaume Apollinaire and Henri Matisse visit the two beasts; we discuss, ideas ignite, colors too. The two artists in turn embody the pictorial avant-garde during the first years of the 20th century.
