Porto Ercole is a small town located on the Argentario promontory, born as a fishing village, it has acquired importance over the centuries thanks to its strategic position and its sheltered bay, ideal for mooring ships. The fortresses built by the Spaniards in the 16th century are still present and can be visited: Forte Filippo, the Rocca and Forte Stella. Porto Ercole is also famous for being the place of death of the artist Caravaggio, who died under mysterious circumstances in 1610.
