That's not true, dear Sabine, that applies to the church of the same name (and holiest monument on the island of Madeira) in Monte. This church is the "Nossa Senhora do Livramento" and the only historical heritage of Curral das Freiras. This was built in the nineteenth century and restored in the twentieth century.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Paz is a memorial church meant to commemorate the bombing of Funchal by German U-boats in WW1 in 1917. People made a promise that when peace returns they would erect another statue in honor of Our Lady would build from the mountain.
