In 1046 the deacon of the cathedral of Verona gave; Cadalo ordered the construction of a Benedictine monastery outside the city walls, in a suburb called Braida. In 1051 the monastery was largely completed and the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III placed it under his protection.

Later in time the monastery was expanded with a church. Various groups have used this monastery.

This complex includes the Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, or Santa Maria Matricole, other places such as the churches of San Giovanni in Fonte and Santa Elena, the cloister of the Canons, the Capitular library, the Canonicale museum and the Vescovado. These places are rich in history and art; a visit is inevitable.
