The ruins of a World War Two radar station sit atop Bard Hill. Different types of radar were tested here and tragically a Lancaster Bomber crashed into a 200ft radar mast in 1945, killing all those on board.

The Salthouse Circular Trail offers a moderate hiking experience, taking you through diverse landscapes along the Norfolk coast. You will cover 5.2 miles (8.3 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 229 feet (70 metres), typically completed in about 2 hours and 11 minutes. As you hike, expect to see the charming flintstone village of Salthouse and ascend onto heathland around Bard Hill. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views stretching over the coastline and the expansive Salthouse Marshes. The route combines coastal paths with inland sections, providing a varied and engaging journey.

The trail conveniently begins and ends in the village of Salthouse, making access straightforward. You will find local shops and pubs in the village, which can be useful before or after your hike. While most paths along the route are easily accessible, be aware that the shingle beach section can be quite soft underfoot. This particular part of the trail might present a challenge and is not suitable if you are using a pushchair. Consider starting your hike earlier in the day to fully enjoy the coastal views and avoid busier times.

This route is notable for its location within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, highlighting its significant natural value. As you follow the path, you will walk alongside the renowned Cley Marshes Nature Reserve. This area is particularly significant as a premier birdwatching site, offering opportunities to observe diverse birdlife. The trail's blend of coastal scenery and ecological importance makes it a distinctive option for exploring the region.
