At the mouth of the Sado River, in front of the city of Setúbal, in a tongue of sand that we now call Tróia, one of the most important fish canning industries flourished during the Roman Empire from the 1st to the 5th centuries. The region's resources were exploited - the abundance of fish, especially sardines, and the salt from estuaries and river beds. Salted fish was prepared and garum and other fish sauces were made and sold in Lusitania and exported to Rome and other provinces.

The Roman ruins of Troy are very well preserved, with walkways along the entire route and detailed explanations of what we see.

The Roman Ruins of Tróia house the largest known fish-salting complex in the Roman world. Also located here is the Early Christian Basilica of Tróia, considered one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the best preserved. The fish-salting complex was built in the first half of the 1st century and developed into a settlement that was occupied until the 6th century. The archaeological sites open to visitors include two large salting workshops, the baths, the mausoleum, the mausoleum's necropolis, and the residential area on Rua da Princesa.
