Located near the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool, the wheel originally opened on 25 March 2010. The structure is 60m high and weighs 365 tons and has 42 fully enclosed capsules. The bike was planned by Great City Attractions for three years. They submitted a planning application stating it would increase tourism to Liverpool. A smaller Ferris wheel operated in the city, located at the Liverpool One leisure complex. This was dismantled due to plans to open the Wheel of Liverpool. Construction was completed on 11 February 2010 at a cost of £6m.
