The Cathedral has not always been located in its current position. In fact, before the Malatesta lordship it was located inside the raised citadel (called Murata) ...
In 1385, at the behest of Andrea Malatesta, the reconstruction of the cathedral in Roman-Gothic style began, which underwent various transformations over the centuries, thus returning to its original forms with the last restoration in the second half of the 20th century.
In July 1960 Pope John XXIII raised the cathedral to the dignity of a minor basilica.
