"The abbay was erected in the 11th century on the side of the ermitage of Bishop Mauro and was converted into a basilica in 1507. In 1562-65 F. Morandi built the staircase and the dome, but the latter was reconstructed by P. C. Borboni and frescoed by G. Milani in 1771-1774. Outstanding is the collection of ex-voto (late 15th - first 19th century)."

Built on the remains of a previous church built in the 9th century, enlarged and embellished in a period presumably between 1001 and 1026 when the monastery was founded, it reached its current appearance at the end of successive restorations between the 15th and 16th centuries century.
