    Vandring

From Lake Baschalva you can see all the way into the Rhine Valley, although that becomes irrelevant when you look at this beautiful mountain lake. Depending on which direction you do the 5 Lakes hike, this is the first or the last of the five lakes on the hike.

The barren landscape between the Schwarzsee and here has its special charm on the 5-lake tour - I often find one of the most beautiful sections.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the typical hiking difficulty for trails leading to Baschalvasee, and are there options for beginners?

The primary route to Baschalvasee, the 5-Lakes Hike, is generally considered an intermediate level hike, requiring appropriate fitness and footwear. It involves varied alpine terrain, including rocky sections and ascents. For beginners, while the full 5-Lakes Hike might be challenging, shorter sections or alternative, less strenuous trails in the wider Pizol area could be explored. Always check route details and elevation profiles before setting out.

Is Baschalvasee accessible via public transport?

Yes, Baschalvasee is accessible via public transport in combination with mountain lifts. The starting point for the 5-Lakes Hike, which includes Baschalvasee, is typically reached by taking a gondola from Wangs or Bad Ragaz up to the Pizol ski area. From there, hikers can access the trails. Check the Pizol mountain railway schedules for operating times, especially during shoulder seasons.

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Baschalvasee and the 5-Lakes Hike?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Baschalvasee and the 5-Lakes Hike. However, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially due to grazing livestock (cows are often present around the lake in summer) and to protect local wildlife. Remember to bring enough water for your dog and to clean up after them.

Is Baschalvasee suitable for family hikes with children?

The full 5-Lakes Hike, which includes Baschalvasee, is a longer and more challenging route, making it better suited for families with older, experienced hiking children. For younger children, consider shorter, easier walks in the Pizol area or only hiking a section of the 5-Lakes trail. Always assess your family's fitness level and the weather conditions before embarking on a mountain hike.

Can you hike to Baschalvasee in winter?

Hiking to Baschalvasee in winter is generally not recommended for the average hiker. The lake is at 2,174 meters (7,133 ft) elevation, and the trails are typically covered in deep snow, making them impassable or requiring specialized equipment like snowshoes or skis, and significant alpine experience. The Pizol area transforms into a ski resort in winter. The best time to visit for hiking is during the warmer, snow-free months.

Is wild swimming permitted in Baschalvasee?

While there are no explicit prohibitions against wild swimming, Baschalvasee is a cold mountain lake at a high elevation (2,174 meters). The water temperature is very low, even in summer, making swimming a bracing experience suitable only for the most adventurous. Always exercise caution when entering cold mountain waters.

Are there any cafes or restaurants near Baschalvasee?

Baschalvasee itself is a natural mountain lake without direct facilities. However, along the 5-Lakes Hike, particularly at the start or end points of the mountain lifts (e.g., Pizolhütte, Laufböden), you will find mountain restaurants and cafes offering refreshments and meals. It's advisable to carry your own snacks and drinks for the hike itself.

How long does it take to walk around Baschalvasee lake itself?

Walking directly around the Baschalvasee lake itself is a relatively short endeavor, taking only about 15-30 minutes, depending on your pace and how much you stop to enjoy the views. The lake is not exceptionally large, and the main trails pass alongside it as part of the longer 5-Lakes Hike.

What kind of wildlife can be seen around Baschalvasee?

The alpine environment around Baschalvasee is home to various wildlife. Hikers might spot marmots, chamois, or ibex in the higher rocky areas. Birdwatchers could see alpine choughs or eagles. In summer, the presence of grazing cows adds to the serene mountain idyll. Keep a respectful distance from all animals and do not feed them.

What makes Baschalvasee a 'place of power'?

Baschalvasee is known as a 'place of power' due to its perceived energetic values, comparable to a cult site. While specific historical records detailing its ancient significance are limited, this designation suggests it may have been a site of spiritual or ritualistic importance in the past. Many visitors report a profound sense of tranquility and unique energy when experiencing the lake.

Is it possible to camp near Baschalvasee?
