Europe Square (Trg Evrope / Piazza Transalpina) is dominated by the monumental 1906 train station building, now located in Nova Gorica on the Slovenian side of the border. It was once the northern railway station of Gorizia and is the starting point for journeys to the Soča Valley, the Vipava Valley, and the Karst region. The square has two names: one Slovenian and one Italian. The mosaic in the center of the square was designed by Franko Vecchiet from Trieste, who belongs to the Slovene ethnic group in Italy, to mark Slovenia's accession to the European Union in 2004.

What is the historical significance of Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope?

Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope holds profound historical significance as a former point of division that became a symbol of European unity. Originally, the square was bisected by a physical barrier, often referred to as the 'Gorizia Wall,' separating Italy and Yugoslavia (now Slovenia) for nearly 60 years after World War II. This division separated families and communities. The wall was famously dismantled on May 1, 2004, when Slovenia joined the European Union, transforming the square into a unified public space and a powerful testament to overcoming geopolitical divides.

Are there any specific landmarks or viewpoints to look for around the square?

The most prominent landmark is the monumental 1906 Nova Gorica railway station building, located on the Slovenian side of the square. Its grand architecture provides a striking backdrop. The central feature of the square itself is a large, circular floor mosaic, designed by Trieste artist Franko Vecchiet. This mosaic precisely marks the former border and is known as the 'mosaic of new Europe,' symbolizing the abolition of demarcation. While the square is flat, the railway station offers a historical viewpoint into the region's past connections.

What public transport options are available to reach Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope?

The square is exceptionally well-connected by public transport. The Nova Gorica railway station is situated directly at the eastern end of the square, on the Slovenian side, making train travel a very convenient option. Additionally, local bus services in both Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) have stops within easy walking distance of the square, providing access from various parts of both cities.

Is Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope suitable for families with children?

Yes, Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope is very family-friendly. As a flat, open urban square, it's easy to navigate with strollers or for children to walk around. The unique experience of standing with one foot in Italy and one in Slovenia on the mosaic is often a memorable highlight for kids. The square also frequently hosts cultural events and activities, especially as Gorizia and Nova Gorica are jointly the European Capital of Culture in 2025, which can offer engaging experiences for all ages.

Are dogs allowed in Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope and are there dog-friendly walks nearby?

Dogs are generally welcome in Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope, provided they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them, as is customary in public spaces. While the square itself is an urban area, the surrounding cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica offer various parks and pedestrian zones suitable for dog walks. For more extensive dog-friendly walks, you can explore routes leading into the nearby Soča Valley or Vipava Valley, which are accessible from the Nova Gorica railway station.

How crowded does Piazza Transalpina / Trg Evrope get, especially on weekends or during events?

As a significant symbol of European unity and a hub for the GO!2025 European Capital of Culture, it attracts many visitors. If you prefer a quieter experience, visiting on weekday mornings or during off-peak seasons might be advisable. However, the vibrant atmosphere during events can also be a highlight for many.
