This small town on the León plateau has a church dedicated to Saint James. It features a six-panel altarpiece, three of which are dedicated to stories about the apostle (two related to the transfer of his body to Galicia and the third to the Battle of Clavijo).

Villar de Mazarife is a village of only 500 inhabitants that seems to do everything it can to attract pilgrims. An albergue on the outskirts has yellow arrows leading to it, even the fruit shop has "Camino" in its name; there are gift shops and a museum with a small adjacent art gallery. The site of Villar was not chosen at random. It was a strategic point on a Roman road that connected major cities.
