Drop Redoubt fort is linked to the citadel via dry moats. You can look round the exterior of the fort for free at any time during daylight. The fort is located on a cliff with a steep drop into the sea but was actually built to defend attackers from inland who had invaded from the other side of Dover.
Drop Redoubt is in the care of English Heritage with occasional guided tours available. See their website for more details english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/western-heights-dover

Are there specific walking trails or circular routes recommended for exploring the Drop Redoubt and its surroundings?

Yes, the Western Heights offer several walking trails, including circular walks that allow you to explore both the historical fortifications and the surrounding chalk meadows. These routes often link the Drop Redoubt with other strong points and dry moats, providing a comprehensive historical and scenic experience. You can find detailed maps and route information to plan your visit effectively.

How long should I allocate for a visit to the Entrance to Drop Redoubt and the wider Western Heights?

To fully appreciate the historical significance and explore the exterior of the Drop Redoubt, along with some of the surrounding Western Heights, visitors should plan for at least 2 to 3 hours. This allows time to walk the perimeter, take in the panoramic views, and read any interpretive signage. If you plan to explore more extensive trails or participate in a guided tour, you may want to allocate half a day.

Is the Entrance to Drop Redoubt and Western Heights accessible for families with young children or those with pushchairs?

While the exterior of the Drop Redoubt and some paths on the Western Heights are generally accessible, the site's historical nature means some areas may be challenging for pushchairs. There are low passages within the fort, and the terrain can be uneven with inclines. Families with young children might enjoy exploring the wider chalk meadows, but direct access into all parts of the fort might be limited. Consider using a baby carrier for very young children.

Are dogs allowed at the Entrance to Drop Redoubt and on the Western Heights trails?

Yes, the Western Heights and the exterior areas around the Drop Redoubt are generally dog-friendly, making it a great spot for walks with your canine companion. Please ensure dogs are kept on a lead, especially around other visitors and wildlife, and remember to clean up after them.

What are the parking options and public transport links for visiting the Drop Redoubt?

Limited parking is available near the Drop Redoubt, typically along Drop Redoubt Road. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, as spaces can fill up quickly. This allows visitors to combine their historical exploration with local dining and overnight stays.

What are the key historical landmarks or viewpoints to look out for besides the Drop Redoubt itself?

Beyond the impressive pentagonal design of the Drop Redoubt, visitors should look for the remains of a 2nd-century AD Roman Pharos (lighthouse) on top of the redoubt, locally known as the 'Bredenstone'. The wider Western Heights also feature an extensive network of dry moats, other strong points, and bomb-proof casemates. The panoramic views over Dover town, its harbour, Dover Castle, and the English Channel (with France visible on clear days) are also significant highlights.

How does a visit to the Western Heights and Drop Redoubt compare to Dover Castle?

Both sites offer rich historical experiences, but they provide different perspectives. Dover Castle is a grand medieval fortress with extensive interior access, exhibitions, and guided tours, focusing on royal history and wartime tunnels.
