In 1122, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela received the privilege from Pope Calixtus II to proclaim a Compostela Holy Year at certain times.
According to the Codex Calixtinus, the Puerta Santa (“Holy Gate”) or Puerta del Perdon (“Gate of Mercy”) of the cathedral may only be opened in leap and jubilee years. These are when July 25th, the anniversary of St. James's death, falls on a Sunday.
