Bonticou Crag Summit

Access to Bonticou Crag Summit is through the Mohonk Preserve, which requires a fee. Currently, it is $15 per hiker. You can typically pay this fee at trailheads such as the Spring Farm Trailhead, which is a common starting point for hikes to the Crag.

While Bonticou Crag is known for its challenging rock scramble, there are options for beginner hikers or those preferring a less strenuous ascent. Alternative trails bypass the most demanding scramble sections, leading directly to the summit viewpoint. These routes still offer rewarding views without the need for hand-and-foot climbing.

The Mohonk Preserve, where Bonticou Crag is located, generally allows dogs on its trails. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Given the challenging nature of the rock scramble, it might be difficult or unsafe for some dogs, especially larger breeds or those not accustomed to scrambling. Consider using the bypass trails if hiking with a dog.

The primary access point is the Spring Farm Trailhead. To get there from New Paltz, head west on Route 299, then turn onto Springtown Road, followed by Mountain Rest Road, and finally Upper 27 Knolls Road. Parking is available at the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak seasons. Arriving early is recommended.

The popular Bonticou Crag Trail is a 2.3-mile loop hike. The time it takes can vary significantly based on your pace, fitness level, and how much time you spend at the summit. For most hikers, completing the loop, including navigating the rock scramble and enjoying the views, can take anywhere from 2 to 3.5 hours.

The name "Bonticou" is believed to have Dutch origins, meaning "spotted cow." This name is said to refer to the distinctive appearance of the crag's boulder-strewn slope, which from a distance might have resembled a spotted cow to early settlers.

The Mohonk Preserve offers a vast network of trails and carriage roads beyond Bonticou Crag. Many hikers enjoy exploring other sections of the Shawangunk Mountains, which feature diverse terrain, additional viewpoints, and unique rock formations.
