The fountain, fed by the Virgin Water, is located at the southern end of Piazza Navona, in front of the Pamphilj palace.
The marble soap dish basin was made in 1575 by Giacomo della Porta during the pontificate of Gregory XIII Boncompagni (1572-1585). It was decorated with groups of mermen, dragons and masks by 11th century artists (Egidio della Riviera, Taddeo Landini, Simone Moschini and Giacobbe Silla Longhi) designed by Giacomo della Porta and replaced in 1874 with copies by Luigi Amici. Innocenzo X Pamphilj (1644-1655) commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to renovate the 16th century fountain.

The Fontana del Moro depicts a nautical scene with tritons, dolphins and a shell. It was originally designed by Giacomo della Porta in the 1570s with later contributions from Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 1650s.
The central figure represents a Moor, or an African, fighting with a dolphin in a shell. There is a debate about whether Bernini intended the figure to be a Moor. Some of the original sculptures were moved to the Galleria Borghese in 1874. In 2011 the fountain was destroyed by a vandal.
