Steyr once housed the largest Waldensian community in Austria. The Waldensians were a reform movement within the Catholic Church. In 1397, 1000 suspects were arrested and 100 burned at the stake.

The monument is intended to commemorate the once strong Waldensian community and its persecution. It is intended to be a memorial for tolerance and mutual understanding.
The Waldensians were a religious lay movement of the 13th/14th century. They were characterized by their way of life in poverty and criticized the wealth of the church.
Exactly 600 years ago - in 1397 - around 100 followers from Steyr were sentenced to death by fire or life imprisonment.
The sculptor Mag. Gerald Brandstötter designed the round sculpture. It depicts the burning of the Waldensians; the female figure symbolizes reconciliation and tolerance.
