In the side porch, at the back of the church, a rare but discreet statue is hidden in the partial shade: a Virgin of polychrome wood from the 14th century that can be opened. The tympanum of the inner portal illustrates the parable of the wise virgins and the foolish virgins. Under Christ's watchful eye, the distracted virgins keep their lamps pointing loosely downwards so that they have no light leading to God while the wise virgins light their way to paradise.
    Nice story to muse on.

St. Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic church in the Alsatian town of Eguisheim. It is a listed building and probably dates from the 11th century.

In the course of the 18th century, however, the church became too small for the rapidly growing population and was also dilapidated. In July 1787 parts of the church collapsed during a service.

The organ on the gallery above the entrance was built in 1839. To date, it has been restored and renewed several times.

Of the Romanesque church, which was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1220, only the bell tower with its gable roof remains. It consists of four stories; the lower sections still retain Romanesque elements, while the upper section is pierced by pointed, paired windows.

The nave of the original church had become too old and too small and was therefore demolished in 1807 and replaced by the spacious, barn-style nave of the present church in 1808 and 1809.

While the church is a central landmark in Eguisheim, specific opening hours for visitors can vary. It's generally accessible during daylight hours, but for precise times, especially for interior visits, it's best to check the official tourism website for Eguisheim or the church's local information board upon arrival. You can find more details on the Eguisheim tourism site.

How long should I plan for a visit to Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul d'Eguisheim and its immediate surroundings?

To fully appreciate the church's historical features, such as the Romanesque portal and the 'Vierge Ouvrante,' and to take a leisurely stroll through the charming concentric streets of Eguisheim, most visitors find that 1 to 2 hours is a good amount of time. If you plan to explore nearby shops, cafes, or extend your walk into the vineyards, allocate more time.

Is Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul d'Eguisheim accessible for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers?

The church is located in the heart of Eguisheim, a village known for its cobblestone streets. While the village center itself is generally walkable, access directly into the church building might have some limitations due to its historic nature, such as steps at entrances. The surrounding village paths are mostly flat but can be uneven. It's advisable to check with local tourism information for the most up-to-date accessibility details.

Are there any family-friendly activities or points of interest near the church in Eguisheim?

Absolutely! Eguisheim is very family-friendly. Beyond exploring the church, families can enjoy walking through the picturesque village, spotting storks nesting on rooftops, and visiting local artisan shops. The village's concentric layout makes for easy and safe exploration. There are also several parks and playgrounds in the wider Eguisheim area, and the surrounding vineyards offer gentle paths suitable for family strolls.

What are some recommended easy walks or circular routes starting from the church?

From the Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul, you can easily embark on several pleasant walks. A popular option is to follow the village's circular streets, which lead you past half-timbered houses and charming squares. For a slightly longer, easy walk, head towards the vineyard paths just outside the village center. These offer scenic views of the church and the Alsatian landscape. Many loop trails in the Eguisheim Alsace region are well-marked and suitable for hikers of all levels.

What is the best time of year to visit Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul d'Eguisheim to avoid crowds?

While the intro suggests spring and autumn for mild weather, to specifically avoid larger crowds, consider visiting during the early morning or late afternoon on weekdays, especially outside of peak summer months (July-August) and major holiday periods. Winter can also offer a quieter, more serene experience, though some amenities might have reduced hours.

Are there cafes or restaurants conveniently located near Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul d'Eguisheim?

Yes, being in the heart of Eguisheim, the church is surrounded by numerous cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. You'll find plenty of options within a very short walking distance, offering traditional Alsatian cuisine, local wines, and places to enjoy a coffee or snack. This makes it easy to combine your cultural visit with a culinary experience.

Can I find viewpoints in Eguisheim that offer a good perspective of the church and the village?

Eguisheim's unique concentric design and its location on the edge of the Vosges foothills provide several excellent viewpoints. Walking up to the three castles (Châteaux des Eguisheim) just above the village offers panoramic vistas of the church, the village, and the surrounding vineyards. Even from within the village, the winding streets often open up to charming perspectives of the church's belfry.

What unique historical or architectural features should I look for inside the church?

Inside, be sure to seek out the Romanesque portal in the belfry, with its intricate carvings depicting Christ in Majesty and the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. Another truly unique artifact is the "Vierge Ouvrante" (Opening Virgin), a rare 13th or 14th-century polychrome wooden sculpture that opens to reveal angels. These pieces offer a profound glimpse into medieval artistry and religious symbolism.

Is it possible to visit Église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul d'Eguisheim during the winter months, and what are winter walks like nearby?

Yes, the church is generally accessible during winter, offering a peaceful atmosphere often enhanced by festive decorations if you visit around Christmas. Winter walks around Eguisheim can be quite charming, with the possibility of snow-dusted vineyards. The village itself remains a beautiful place for a stroll, and many local businesses stay open. Always check the weather forecast for Eguisheim before planning outdoor activities in winter.

What is the historical significance of the church's belfry compared to the rest of the building?

The belfry (bell tower) is the oldest surviving part of the church, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It retains significant Romanesque elements in its lower sections, transitioning to Gothic characteristics higher up. In contrast, the current nave was largely rebuilt between 1808 and 1809 after the original structure became dilapidated and partially collapsed. This blend of architectural periods makes the belfry a particularly important historical feature.
