It is assumed today that the Garath knight's seat already existed in the 9th century. The Knights of Garderode resided here. However, the origins of Garath Castle have not been clarified exactly. At the end of the 14th century it belonged to the knights of Kalkum. The name Garath Castle has only been in use since the 20th century, previously people often spoke of the Garath house.
