Right near the town center and not far from the kindergarten, the tower stands as a contemporary witness of the former city fortifications. Next to it is a nice children's playground.

It probably once belonged to the city fortifications of Heldburg. The massive tower was built in 1551, i.e. at the time when the Reformation was taking hold in the southern Thuringian community. A special feature of the building is its floor plan. The top of the tower is not in the middle, but shifted to one side.
In the 17th century, the tower was used as a prison for prisoners caught in the witch hunts. This is probably where his name comes from.
