The church stands in the place where Sant'Andrea de Acquarenariis was located, named after the water vendors in the area, who, after extracting the water from the Tevere, purged it of the mixed sand.

The church was then called Santa Maria della Pace to commemorate the concluded Peace of Bagnolo which put an end to the war between the Stato Pontificio, Venezia and the Regno di Napoli.
